Kitchen Design Ideas
If you’re planning – or in the middle of – a kitchen remodeling project, whether you’re Totally Kitchen Obsessed (TKO) or not, there’s a lot to think about. Here’s a sampling of what we’re going to be covering on this site!
Kitchen Counter Tops
Modern kitchen counter ideas go way beyond our parents’ plastic laminate, tile or wood. When it comes to kitchen countertop material we can now check out hundreds of colors of granite countertops, as well as multiple other stones and colors. A quartz kitchen counter or solid surface counter (Corian or one of the many corian alternatives) is also a great option instead of granite kitchen tops. Corian counter prices are pretty high but some of the alternatives are much more reasonably priced. Finally, be sure to compare kitchen countertops of several types and price ranges before you make your decision, hard though that may be when you’ve fallen in love with the granite of your dreams!
Simple Kitchen Backsplash Ideas
For many of us, the backsplash is the last area to get designed in our kitchen remodel. In fact, sometimes the backsplash doesn’t get done for months after everything else is finished! Part of that may be due to trying to get too complicated or fussy with our kitchen backsplash ideas. Especially if you have very special granite or other complex patterns in the kitchen, simple may be better. So, for example, you might go with a stainless steel backsplash or copper backsplash, as a beautiful and simple backdrop to your counters and accessories. Texture can add pattern to metal backsplashes without adding color. Decorative ceramic tile can be simple or complex: consider basic subway tile in a single color with a subtly toning grout color. When designing a tile backsplash, consider a range of muted and related tones as seen in a tumbled marble backsplash, or perhaps go for the jewel-like glow of glass tile. Kitchen wall tiles are more practical (especially in heavy-splatter areas like behind the range) when they have fewer grout lines to seal and clean, so consider larger tiles rather than the currently fashionable mosaics.
Kitchen Remodeling Ideas
Dream kitchens grow out of a combination of ideas and practical reality. Where to find the ideas? Magazines, books, websites like this one, friends’ kitchens, kitchens in show homes, store displays, are all fertile ground for ideas. The critical thing is to capture them when you have them! A notepad and pen, a tiny digital camera, or a voice recorder are all great tools for catching ideas before they disappear.
Kitchen Colors
What color should you paint your kitchen? Kitchen colors are very personal, and there’s a situation for every possible color, even black. Some ideas for coming up with kitchen color schemes:
- Choose a patterned fabric, and use the colors and proportions to guide your color scheme
- Look in your clothes closet, and base your kitchen paint ideas on the colors you most like to wear
- Collect kitchen pictures that you love, and look for a common color theme
- Browse kitchen decorating ideas magazines, books and websites, see which color schemes jump out at you
- Visit art galleries and consider the artwork as a series of possible color schemes, or use a favorite piece of art as a basis
- When you’re in a bookstore, look at the book covers as color schemes
Kitchen painting ideas can come from anywhere. Don’t forget that there’s no rule which says that all your walls, or all your cabinets, have to be the same color, nor that the ceiling has to be white, nor that the cabinet frames must be the same color as the doors and drawer fronts. Cabinet doors are perfect for color blocking, or imagine sets of drawers in graduated shades of the same color, from dark on the bottom to light on top.
