There’s nothing like a good home-cooked meal. But as any chef will agree, the key to successful cooking often lies in a well-kept kitchen. Creating a gourmet feast requires room to manoeuvre, and an organised space is much easier to keep clean. So, if your work surfaces are looking worse for wear, it could be time for a complete overhaul. But kitchens cost serious money, so you don’t want to get it wrong. The trick is to plan exactly what you want, and – most importantly – what you can afford… not forgetting home insurance to protect your new investment.

By taking a few simple precautions, you can make some great savings and avoid any hidden costs. Firstly decide whether you want to work with some or most of what you’ve already got, or whether you’d prefer to start from scratch. Look at your current layout and the ways in which it could be improved.

To work well, the fridge, cooker and sink should be in a triangle so you can move easily between the three. Avoid any wasted space and consider where utensils can be stored. Also, leave yourself enough surface space to prepare meals.

The colour scheme is very important. If you have a small space, opt for light tones to make the room appear bigger. While fitting tiles above kitchen counters can make cleaning and wiping the area much easier too.

See the light

The choice of lighting will also have a considerable impact on the room. Install a spotlight above the cooker, so you can execute dishes with military precision.

If you’re lost for ideas, DIY stores, kitchen showrooms, magazines and home improvement TV shows can be a great source of inspiration. Speak to shop assistants and ask for their advice. You could even create a scrap book of images and colour charts.

Clever spending

Take measurements, make a list of the utilities already in place, and work out a budget. Your units, appliances, tiles and worktops are likely to make up the bulk of the cost… but don’t forget the flooring, lighting, paint and/or wallpaper, handles, taps, kickboard, end panels, pelmet, etc. All of these things will add to your budget and the length and complexity of the project.

Some more affordable kitchens are available to take away that day from DIY stores, but most need to be ordered and this can take weeks, even months, so plan your project accordingly. The higher spec the kitchen, the longer it’s likely to take.

Cook off!

Now, think about actually installing the kitchen. Doing it yourself will help keep costs down, but do you have the right DIY skills? Professionals should be called in to do all the electrical and gas work, and only experienced DIYers should tackle the plumbing.

Good tradespeople tend to be busy, so it’s worth getting quotes well in advance.

Remember, as with any building work, there are always risks of damage – so make sure your home insurance is up to date and you’ve got the right level of cover by comparing different quotes with Confused.com, for more advice, read our article Got the Builders In? In addition, don’t forget to update your buildings and contents insurance to reflect any interior changes you’ve made… You don’t want to be left underinsured.

And then I bought a kitchen from heaven. Well, not really a kitchen, but a kitchenware set that meets my needs as well as that of my family. I was so delighted at how affordable it was; the set even arrived on free shipping, right at our doorstep.

First off I got a ten-piece porcelain enamel nonstick cookware set by Rachael Ray (who is one of my kitchen idols!). This will come in handy especially on Thanksgiving, for which I am bound to be as motherly and grateful in my preparations as possible. For more result go to www.camping-outdoors-recipes.com. Roast turkey, oyster stew, green olives, celery, pickles, cranberry sauce, snowflake potatoes, creamed asparagus tips, fruit cake, and French drip coffee (I’m drooling): I am determined to make this year’s celebration the most delightful we’ve ever had. (The only downside is that this potpourri can mean dishwashing horror.)

The set also came with a 14-cup coffee maker that includes a charcoal water filter. You have no idea how necessary this is to me; we’ve been enduring instant coffee for years now! This is perfect for my husband George, who will finally get a taste of the Yemeni coffee his backpacking pals had given him last month. I can picture him, waking up at six in the morning, rising early to make a cup for him and for me. You can also go to www.apples-recipes.com. Oh, he loves his coffee; George is a caffeine addict who can’t get by a morning without a cup and a newspaper to read. Since he works at home, he’ll also have the fortune of free-flowing coffee all throughout the day.

I should mention that included in my purchase was an Oprah Magazine Cookbook, which also came in on free shipping. My daughter Alice will find that useful. Unlike most teenagers, she isn’t allergic to kitchen chores. Whenever I prepare dinner, she would usually position herself at the staircase and dutifully watch me perform. And whenever I watch the Lifestyle Network, she’d sit on the couch with me, absorbed in studying all those recipes. Like mother, like daughter? Not so, I don’t think; she may grow up to be a better cook than I am.

My thirteen-year-old son Harold will also be pleased with the kitchenware set. Why? He can now use the 3-Speed Control Hand Mixer, which I got by adding only thirty bucks, and which is powerful enough to mix multiple batches of cookie dough. Now all I have to do is post the chocolate chip recipe on the fridge, so that when Harold’s sweet tooth acts up he can address his hunger independently.

So I guess I am awfully glad to have been scouring the Internet for the best online deals on food and cooking. My kitchen from heaven came on free shipping – and my family, who are my angels, will doubtless be as glad as I am for this blessing.

Planning to sell your house? If you watch carefully, you’ll see that it’s the women who influence the house buying decision of the family and most women begin by evaluating the kitchen. So if you wish to get maximum resale value for your house, which is normal, renovate your kitchen before you put it on the market.

Roughly speaking the cost of renovating a kitchen can be anything between $6,000 and $30,000. Of course one is looking at maximizing the returns on investment and therefore outgoing costs will be given preference in the renovation decisions – but remember, as with any investment, you’ll usually make your money when you buy (not when you sell), so, in this case you’ll be making your money when you renovate your kitchen – not when you try to sell the house.

The renovations of a kitchen range from the cosmetic appeal of the kitchen to the appliances. However when looking at maximizing resale value, the designers at Urban Key recommend that you concentrate on the kitchen features primarily, before moving onto the appliances.

1. Doors – Opt for the melamine covered doors which are cost effective and durable too. Choose bold dark colours since they’re not only lower in cost but also hide stains which are common in a kitchen. Of course if you are looking at high end renovations then, you could go for solid timber, 2 Pack or vinyl wrap doors and gables, but remember that they could put costs well above your benchmark cost. For timber also, the matt look is much lower in cost while the satin look costs more. If opting for the high gloss look, remember that defects show up clearly here and therefore the high gloss is a high maintenance finish.

2. Shelves – Don’t bother breaking down the entire shelf structure, but on the contrary redo the face of the shelf to match the doors finish. You could opt for a repaint job or change the edging on these structures, or just replacing the bare essential carcasses. Remember here the cost of the labour is sometimes even higher than the raw material so if you have any skills on this front, now would be a good time to show them. Also if you are hiring labour, it’s advisable to hire either local cabinet-makers or cabinet-makers who offer a warranty for the job since you could always ask them for repairs later if things do go wrong.

3. Benchtops – Kitchen splash backs and counter tops form a large part of the physical outlook of a kitchen and therefore feature high in the renovation list. There are suppliers, such as Surface Dynamics, who will just resurface your existing benchtop with a granite overlay, and have carved out a niche in doing just that, but this does not mean that you should rule out any local supplier you know. Undertake some extensive research before choosing your bench top. The most commonly used bench top is the granite 20-40 mm thick slab, or the overlays are about 7mm.

While a laminated top is of course a much cheaper option, it is advisable to go in for the granite or engineered granite, such as CaesarStone for your home. Not only is granite chip and scratch resistant but you can chop and cut on it (highly not recommended) without having to bother about the surface being porous. Also, consider how the kitchen might be used by the new owner, so as to ensure the layout is workable for someone else – we often compromise our own comfort in our own homes, but this is the time to change anything which has been niggling at you. Also note that the recommended depth for the bench tops is no more than 900 mm (should not exceed 300mm overhang) while the minimum length could vary from 900 mm to 1500 mm depending on the number of people cooking. So if looking at a kitchen bench for two cooks working side by side, the length is better if closer to 1500mm. Note that the maximum sizes of granite slabs changes with different products, so ensure that the layout dimensions work with the size constraints.

4. Flooring – The flooring of a kitchen also forms an integral part of the look of the room. So consider the pros and cons of the material used before taking the plunge. Cork tiles cost roughly $90 per square metre and feel warm and soft as opposed to the often cold and slippery tiles, although anything cooling is often good in Australia. Cork floorings last 10 to 20 years depending on maintenance. But they stain fast and in a kitchen where spills are common one would need to clean these quickly or else bear with a stained look for a long time. The linoleum tiles and Vinyl sheet floorings cost less (about $50 to $60 laid), but can damage easily and some people may think they look cheap. There are stone, ceramic and terracotta tiles, which are easy to maintain but are heavy. If possible, hardwood is a great choice, working in well with Aussie building and fashion trends, but if you don’t already have a timber floor, you’ll need to be willing to spend somewhere near $130 per square metre.

As a tip, and I would love to get feedback from you if you’ve tried this, get an appraiser to value your house and offer suggestions to better the value (most often these will involve the kitchen), and after the renovation is done, have them back again to reappraise. Or another idea is to have an open house, advertised just privately in the paper (no need to get a real estate agent yet) and take the vistors around asking them what changes, especially to the kitchen, they would like to see – you’ll get some great ideas from the sort of people who are currently in the market! Please feel free to email me if you have any feedback on these ideas at info@urbankey.com.au.

So, it is most often best to choose the budget, the materials and to renovate your kitchen BEFORE an official For Sale sign goes up to potential buyers, and watch the value of your house rise immediately.

Seated in a comfortable chair, the sun streaming through an open window while birds are singing, you are sipping your morning coffee and enjoying a delicious breakfast. There is no doubt about it, the kitchen is the heart of every home and it has always been the goal of any experienced house builder to achieve a timeless ambiance in the kitchen, a setting that is enjoyable, yet consistent with the rest of the home. Therefore, it is obvious that a kitchen design has to be created equally as elegant and appealing as the rest of the house, actually, even more so! A kitchen has to be functional, equipped with the appropriate appliances, and be spacious with adequate counters and storage cabinets.

Unfortunately, not every residence has the luxury of space, extra room that allows for a large island, double work stations, a serving counter, or a seating area for casual dining. In that case, you may require professional advice to help you figure out your best options.

If you are in the market to upgrade your existing kitchen, or you are building a house and need a kitchen design, maybe your kitchen galley needs an efficiency overhaul, or you want to beautify your home because you are selling it, you may require the services of one of the finest registered builders of the Brisbane area, Urban Key.

It is widely known that an individual’s personality is reflected in his or her home, and by the colours and styles that were picked. These principles also include the kitchen and surrounding areas and when a renovator or builder starts planning their project, the owners should ask themselves what their final goal is, and how they want to achieve it. What is more important, a classical Australian oak kitchen, with a soft welcoming ambiance, or a more dramatic and futuristic design with stainless steel accents and elliptical bubble glass shelves? Do you want to put more emphasis on aesthetics, or on usefulness?

A knowledgeable building quoter will offer you a mix of budgetary constraint, suitability and visual pleasure for your kitchen. At Urban Key, their goal is to provide their customers with a long lasting sense of both satisfaction, and accomplishment. Customers will get the exact kitchen they imagined. They will be given top product advice, all Australian made merchandise, flexibility in materials and design for both kitchens and furniture, and the utmost in professionalism, of course!

Urban Key has strong philosophies on quality and lifestyle, ideals which reflect in their services and products. Urban Key’s experts will gladly help you with both planning and implementing innovative and fantastic kitchen features, so you will obtain the dream kitchen you are aiming for. A design that stands out, and reflects your personality, will give you years of pleasure while adding thousands of dollars to your home’s value. It is true, at Urban Key, they offer fine kitchen designs, custom furniture, cabinetry, and fantastic fixtures at affordable prices.

This must be a well-known fact: the right use of the proper tools will in fact develop your cooking know-how. Not only that, but it will also put in an additional degree of simplicity to food preparation, as well as enhance your general contentment with the progression of this process. With the proper kitchen tools, you will actually get the chance to give increased attention to food, instead of bothering with the lack of the right kitchen knives, steels or other tools.

Kitchen knives are imperative when you cook. And if you want to get good food, you have to get good kitchen knives. For more results go to www.cajuns-recipes.com. You might even go on a bender just a bit for acquiring the best knives. The good news is that you will not need an entire store of knives to satisfy your cooking needs. Essentially, you will need three types of knives forming the basis of your kitchen tools necessities.

First, you need a chefs knife. Its size ranges from 8 to 10. The bottom edge of the chefs knife should be coiled. Keep in mind that this is your main kitchen knife. The coiled bottom edge is useful as it moves easily on the chopping board. If you are looking for an adaptable knife, the chefs knife is what you are looking for. You can chop onions, carrots, tomatoes, and even herbs with it. But you can also cut various types of meat with it and you can even have a cake nicely slices with such a knife.

Second, for the special purpose of slicing bread, you will need a serrated knife. Typically, bread knives are serrated. Most skilled cooks suggest a serrated knife that has sharp serrations as a replacement for undulating serrations. Sharp serrations mean improved control of the knife. You can choose different sizes for serrated knives. Longer serrated knives (8 to 10 long) will do a nice job slicing uncut loaves, while a shorter such knife is ideal for smaller bread types, such as bread rolls that you use for making sandwiches.

Finally, another of the basic kitchen knives is the paring knife. Its size is small, ranging from 2 to 4. The paring knife is perfect for peeling fruits and vegetables, for slicing miniature items, and for other types of detail work, particularly when the food is in your hand.

Of course, your set of kitchen tools cannot lack a sharpening steel. Keep in mind that no knife is going to do a good job if it is not sharp enough. A sharpening steel will complete your set of kitchen tools marvelously. Do not worry; it will not occupy too much space and it will be very easy to use. Grasp the knife in your dominant hand. With the other hand grab the sharpening steel.

The steel point should be pushed into a firm waist-level plane. Grasp the knife base and place it at the tip of the steel in an angle of 20 degree. Then, gradually get the knife downward the steel. You will need to drag the knife back for the full sharp edge to go against the steel. Next, do this again for the other face. You need to do this four or five times. After you are finished, the knife should be rinsed and dried.
No set of kitchen tools is complete in the absence of good kitchen knives. Remember also to always keep close by a sharpening steel. Your knife will be of no use if it is not sharp.

How you use water in your home on a daily basis affects the environment. It’s very easy to take advantage of this precious resource because of its availability. With hotter summers and increased droughts, however, it is important to save every little drop. Here are some tips on ways you can do your part in the fight to conserve water in your kitchen.

Rather than washing fruits and vegetables under continuous running water, fill up a large bowl and do the major cleaning in there. Once the produce has been cleaned, rinse it quickly a final time under running water to wash off any additional pesticide, herbicide, and fungicide residue.

Think ahead and make sure you plan meals before you step into the kitchen, especially if it involves cooking meats that are in the freezer. A common household trick is to thaw meats and other frozen foods in running hot water.

The problem with that is the water would need to be on a hefty length of time to fully thaw the food. There are several options for thawing foods. You can either defrost it in the microwave or by leaving it in the refrigerator overnight or you can fill up a pot full of water and thaw the meat on the stove on low heat.

If you have an ice maker in your fridge, refrain from using it. Your drinking water can be just as cold as ice if you leave it in the fridge. If you use a sink filter, put the water in enclosable pitchers. If you purchase bottles of gallons of water at the grocery, put those in the fridge as well.

By far, the dishwasher is the biggest water-consuming device in your kitchen. Opt for a water-efficient model if you can. When using the dishwasher, make sure you only run full loads. An incredible amount of water is wasted when the dishwasher is used for only several dishes. To prevent having to run the dishwasher on another cycle to get rid of tough food debris, make sure you scrub your dishes with a brush first. Don’t scrub them under running water. Fill up on side of your sink to help with those stubborn stains.

When washing dishes by hand, fill up one side of the sink for washing and the other for rinsing. Alternately, if you prefer not to fill up the sink with water to wash, make sure you put a bit of water on each dish to soften the food debris. When it’s time to wash, don’t run the water while scrubbing. Use a minimal amount of soap so rinsing will require less water.

Remember: A little bit goes a long way. Applying these tips and others in your daily routine will affect not only your water bill but also the well-being of the world.
